It is so important a phenomenon that it can transform any given event or change in business environment into a threat or an opportunity. On micro level venture capitalists along with other key indicators also study over all perception of prospective investment market before making their final decision. On macro level multinational companies and governments rely heavily on perception index before making any investment venture in or partnership with another country. If overall perception indicators are good investment or partnership will be made and if indicators are negative project will be abandoned. And they cannot be blamed for abandoning the project because every investment project has to achieve either financial gains in case of private investment or political gains in case of governmental partnership.

This phenomenon has taken a more serious dimension because now we live in a uni-polar world where one country with immense political and economic clout dictates its agenda. Furthermore we happen to be living in the age of globalisation where multi-national companies have more financial muscles than individual governments to force their way into any national boundaries. An interesting aspect of current financial crisis that is sweeping through western economies across both sides of Atlantic is that governments here are feeling the brunt of recession while organisations are still making huge profits. Of course apart from those few related to finance who are responsible for bringing spectacular collapse of property and financial markets in Europe and North America. So in future countries like Pakistan have to curry favour these big multi-nations as well as big players in international politics.

Human history has told us that Capital has always been an undisputed king. Or to put is more simple way Economy is everything. Huge stock pile of arsenals and advanced delivery mechanism with weak economy cannot and will not save a country or a nation or an empire. For those people who say they will shut down their factories for the sake of nuclear bomb I can only ask them who they would protect with their ‘Dear Bomb’ when there would no one to be protected. Histories are full of examples from Sparta to USSR where their advanced and sophisticated weaponry was unable to stop their disintrigation because their economies collapsed. Therefore focus should be on economy because it is only thing that keeps us alive. When you are hungry you cannot eat bullets no matter you have hundreds of them. You have to eat bread and only good economy guarantees bread on the table.

Problem with a country like Pakistan is that for last six decades people have been taught twisted notions of false pride and distorted histories. Result of this kind of teaching is that your whole population becomes an ever ready army you only have to tinker with their emotions. Whatever they do they do under the influence of their emotions. In such a society there exists no place for sanity or rationality. No one spare a minute to think about the consequences of their actions. If it feels good then do it no matter what. In such an environment no one for the fear of his/her life and dignity, can suggests of having good cordial relationships with the USA for its economic and military assistance and we should be very careful about Mr Davis case.

Because of this knee jerk attitude of our society no one takes us seriously even when we have genuine concerns. For us everything becomes a battle between good and bad or anything can put Islam in danger and we start protesting on our streets and close down our own businesses. In order to show our rage against Danish government we destroy properties bearing the brand of Telenor. Because of our irrational behaviour as a society outside world have a very negative perception of Pakistan. That is one of the reasons big multinationals companies are reluctant invest their capital in Pakistan.

In nation building patience is of prime importance. It took country like China with huge resources, more than hundred years to displace Japan as second biggest economy in the world. They did not achieve this by spending their time protesting against Japan or the USA or the UK on their streets. Instead they spent all their time and energies in their factories to become ‘Factory of the world’. They learnt their history lesson that foreigners ruled them because they had no money. Now every economy around the world makes decision after getting a nod of approval from Beijing only because they are sitting on largest foreign reserves in the history of mankind.

<span style="font-size:12.0pt; It is pretty impressive quotation and I must admit its damn right. According to Cambridge Dictionary revolution is” a change in the way a country is governed, usually to a different political system and often using violence or war.” Before we move any further as far as Tunisia is concerned it could be a kind of revolution as we are in for a new wave of political freedom and political participation with association that were missing since Ben Ali imposed himself upon Tunisia. It is ‘a kind of revolution’ as no one questioned the legitimacy of capitalist economy in Tunisia. In Egypt it is a change in which Army is going to control the government, moving from direct control to indirect control through an elected parliament. So in Egypt Army will continue to play central role by granting some unprecedented changes in electoral process.
Now as far as Pakistan is concerned it is a society of impatient souls. Pregnancy needs time to get mature and then deliver. In Pakistan people do not have a habit to allow time to allow situation to fully develop into full fledge change. Every now and then they become impatient and start crying for change. In other words we normally have abortions in every ten years or so. And as we know abortion is both hurtful and undesirable in every case.
And for those hinging on events in Middle East to become a catalyst of change in Pakistan, they have to keep on waiting, especially those with right wing religious agendas. Watching their poor acting skills on various TV channels one can only feel sorry for them. They try their upmost to relate these events with situation in Pakistan with their twisted logics devoid of facts on ground in Tunisia and Egypt. They struggle to convince themselves, let alone their audience about how these events have any truck with their right wing religious agenda. No matter what they say or imply they were unable to deny two basic facts about upraising in Tunisia and Egypt. First is the composition of participants in protests. It is mixed gather with women chanting slogans with their men folks and more importantly not wearing hijab from head to toe but wearing jeans and holding smart phones in their hands. Men we see are mostly clean shaven and whenever asked to comment they do not invoke any divine text to back their actions. So these set of people do not fit into their profile of agents of change.
Secondly no matter how hard they tried our right wing pseudo scholars could not find a single instance where protestors were using anti-USA or anti-Isreal slogans or banners during their marches. I have seen their faces hanging in shame for unable to find anti America feelings. For their tiny twisted mind it is ‘un-natural’, hence sooner or later they would term this genuine uprising for political and economic change as artificially manufactured by CIA.
This is of course not a revolution but people desperately agitating against corrupt regimes for their political and economic needs. In Pakistan though there are large scale problems but still people have various channels to vent their anger. The moment Pakistan will be able to over-come its debt to GDP ratio imbalance it has resources and potential to become an economic power house of South Asia. We in Pakistan have to turn our attention towards our economy as it is the key element where future of Pakistan hinges on. Analysing events unfolding around us is not a bad thing, but objectivity should be our guiding principle in every scenario. Wishing something to happen the way we want it to happen is not going to achieve anything but despair and confusion. That is what we are suffering from thanks to our arm-chair right wing scholars.
Coming out every now and then, shutting down businesses and scaring foreign investors away are not going to help Pakistan. It would further damage our heavily haemorrhaging economy. It is time to channel all our efforts in the direction of economic recovery. Both in Tunisia and Egypt people are up against growing chasm between have and have-nots. They are furious about joblessness and rising cost of living. Let us try to stem the flow of economic down-turn by doing our part responsibly. Let us try to avoid revolution because it demands blood and destruction. Let us create economic opportunities for our people as we all know that people can live without ideologies and faiths but people cannot survive without bread.

From Failed State to Failed Society

Which comes before which? I mean to say whether our state failed us first and then society as a whole degenerated or vice versa. But then I think we are at such brink where this distinction does not make any difference. People say that Pakistani society has split in the middle into two mutually exclusive groups after the cold blooded murder of Mr Taseer, but I refute this argument no sirs there is no division an over whelming majority of ‘ordinary’ Pakistanis are supporting Mr Qadri’s violent act and they either consider Mr Taseer as ‘Wajbul qatl’ or blame Mr Taseer for his own murder. So allow me to say there is no split in the society only few ‘miss fits’ are trying to raise their genuine concerns and by and large everyone has endorse this violent act. What I see in tomorrow’s Pakistan, Mr Taseer’s murderer will become a hero and most likely he will walk free with his ‘head held high’.

Honestly speaking I never thought there would such a day in my life where I would see people would refuse to condemn a cold blooded criminal. If a society refuses to honour sanctity of human life, fair play and helping the weak amongst itself for the sake whatever, it does not deserve to exist. Those who are showering flowers on Mr Qadri will soon be at the receiving end of another Qadri’s bullets.

Today I feel ashamed to be associated with such a society and lost all hopes that there could be improvement. With such heavy heart I salute the courage shown by Mr Taseer Shaheed as he was a ray of hope in total and pitch darkness. I also advice all other ‘miss fits’ to be very careful if you have to live in this land of extremism because forces you are voicing against are cannibals. When they will have no one else to kill they will start killing one another. They kill their own children and siblings and call it ‘honour’. So they would stop at nothing because they do not believe in dialogue or mutual co-existence on the basis of self respect and freedom. This is a hypocritical gathering that hates and hurls abuses on the USA and early in the every morning form queues at the US Embassy Islamabad to leave Pakistan for good.

A word of extreme care for ‘miss fits’, you should refrain from pinning any hopes on glitz and glitter of media that feed only few urban centres of right wing middle class in Pakistan. This mushrooming growth of irresponsible TV anchorpersons provide majority of their air time to right wing hate mongers with highly retrogressive and crude views. That is why when you ‘miss fit’ lot came out of your homes disregarding all threats to your lives and livings in solidarity with Mr Taseer in Karachi they completely blacked you out.

Today with exception of very minute few ‘miss fits’, Pakistan is a failed society because there is no sanctity of human life. People have been taught on distorted histories and false pride with absolutely no sense of fair play. A society that has failed criminally to protect its weaks in fact it allows them to be cleansed ‘legally’. A hypocritical society where Mr Taseer’s murder is termed as an act of God and his murderer has a right of fair trial.

I am hoping against hope that this time around Mr Taseer Shaheed’s murder might start a social evolution in Pakistan and left this society from sub-human level to human society.

No Country for Sane Men

One by one, extremists are silencing every sane voice in Pakistani society. The cold blooded murder of Salman Taseer is another warning for people who are harbingers of sanity and tolerance and crude reminders for them that they are not welcome in this land of fundamentalists and extremists. I was astonished at the hypocrisy of people when after witnessing harrowing violence at the hands extremists to their fellow countrymen, women and children they still have galls to say that it is not Islam. When a lady anchor person on Geo TV asked a religious leader whether he would condemn Mr Taseer’s murder he blatantly said “No”. And this religious leader happens to be the leader of movement for the protection of current blasphemy laws in Pakistan. He further commented that murder of Mr Taseer was an act of God but fate of his murderer should be decided by courts. I am sure he was a true representative of Islam yet lady anchor person finished her programme by saying Islam is religion of peace nothing else. I do not know who she was trying to fool herself or people listening to her hypocritical remarks. Anything that discourages sense of fair play and helping the weak should be vigorously discouraged.

Watching various Pakistan TV channels one cannot help feeling that everyone was trying to be apologetic for Mr Taseer’s murderer by giving qualifying statements about what Mr Taseer said on blasphemy laws and motives behind such a violent act. As if Mr Taseer was himself to blame for his murder. When extremists killed innocent people of Pakistan in mosques, in market places or even in hospitals everyone proclaimed they were not Muslims and foreign hands were involved because a Muslim could not kill a fellow Muslim. I am still waiting for what would they say about Malik Mumtaz Qadiri. He is surely an ordinary Muslim. I am sure now everyone in unison would proclaim that Malik Mumtaz Qadiri is not true representative of ordinary Muslims. Ordinary Muslim is tolerant and peace loving.

This is a murder most foul. It brought forward the nakedness and emptiness of Pakistani society. A society bent on killing every sane element amongst itself. A totally deranged and dysfunctional society where only those people holding guns in their hands have monopoly over everything from political discourse to basic human rights. I hope Mr Taseer’s murder would not go in vain and the debate he started should be brought into its rightful conclusion. But I have a very little hope and I am also concerned about the safety of all those people who are trying their best to break the status quo in whichever field they work because it seems Pakistan is a country where there is no place for sane people.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! In management whenever we come across any challenge we confront it by taking account of strengths and weaknesses within our organisation. As managers our efforts are almost entirely based upon understanding our immediate and remote environments in which we operate. If we have strengths then we take all important measures to turn this new situation into an opportunity and maximise profits. If we do not have necessary attributes to confront new situation, then we try to either neutralise threat or to make necessary changes to minimise its negative impacts on our business. But an important thing to remember is as managers we have to evaluate our environment without any bias or prejudice. As we know it very well that tempering with evaluation by replacing facts with fictions or personal whims and prejudices render it inaccurate and biased. If implemented it would be a disaster for any business.
Pakistan as a society has failed to assess its environment realistically and result of which it has been repeating same mistake over and over again. And they are bent on making same mistake on the issue of Wikileaks revelations. Irrespective of its contents majority of Pakistanis think it is west’s conspiracy against Pakistan in particular and Muslim world in general. Because their assessment is biased therefore either they dismiss it altogether or make a wrong decision to tackle it. Decision would be wrong because it is A- based upon personal biases and prejudice and B- has failed to incorporate operational or inherent strengths and weaknesses. And this is not limited to Wikileaks unfortunately this unrealistic approach can be seen in every other situation such as terrorism, blasphemy, sectarianism, violence, women rights issues, natural disasters so far and so forth.
The best way forward is to take a break from old ways of assessing situation and make a fresh start. Some basic rethinking is involved in making fresh start. These include:
1- Pakistan is not centre of this world.
2- World is not against us.
3- We are part of this world and do not and cannot live in isolation.
4- Every Pakistani is equal irrespective of class, creed, sex or religion.
5- We have to work along other countries to achieve our national goals.
6- We should recognise our size and power before making any decision.
7- Fully aware of our strengths and weaknesses.
8- Anyone having different point of view cannot necessarily be an Israeli, Indian, American or foreign agent. He/she is as patriotic as anyone else.
9- Do away with anything that stops or hinders progress either by making it private or reject it altogether.
10- Sanctity of human life should be given prime importance.
I certainly believe that if Pakistanis start taking unbiased and realistic approach towards any political or social issue they will start making good decisions which in turns leads to the path of bright and successful future.

<div style="MARGIN-TOP: 10px; of Aasia Bibi on blasphemy charges, it ruptured the ostensibly thick and immutable veneer of rightist argument that there was unanimity among all sections of religious elements on death penalty of blasphemy. Now a very sizeable and serious section of religious elements has come forward with challenging views on present state of blasphemy laws in Pakistan. Interestingly, all those who are opposed to any change or repealing of this inhuman and obnoxious act from the statue book belong to politico-religious parties. And those in favour of changes or repealing of this act have no vested interests or have little or no political stakes.
Apart from that Pakistani media especially electronic media with exceptions of few have been dominated by rightist views. People with orthodox, out-dated and oft-repeated views have been given more air time and have never been taken to task by asking strong probing questions. It seems it is an exercise to strengthen the status quo and stifle any voice which prompts someone to think out of the box. If you want to win an argument it has been the most effective and common practice to quote some Hadith or Quaranic verse in favour of your argument and nobody would dare to oppose you. It would normally not because he/she does not want to oppose you but only because of fear of his/her life. It is because rationality and religion are mutually exclusive. Or should I say sanity and religion do not mix very well.
I have always been of the view that if you bring something in public you must accept the public scrutiny. If you want to protect or preserve something then keep it safely away from public domain. Therefore if you bring your religion in to political or public sphere then you must have strong defence. Religion should be subject to same parameters that we normally use to dissect any other social phenomenon. Anywhere in the world when societies tried to stop the clock of evolution on religion after making it political it morphed into a source of great destruction.
Religion is a human experience and let it be this way. It was a great event in common history of human beings but clock did not stop there. It has moved on, we are evolutionary beings our economics, our science, our industry, our culture, our language in fact every facet of our life is evolutionary. There is nothing constant in this world and religion is no exception. Therefore let us embrace big wide world and become the part of human race that is our true identity. Let us preserve human race by preserving human life.

Let Us Make a Difference

Yet another Aasia Bibi convicted of blasphemy and condemned to death by hanging. While reading this news piece I was looking for a surprise. Something unusual, extraordinary and thought provoking debate followed by concerted efforts from all sections of Pakistani society to make a difference. To stand up and say good bye to old ways, shun the past bigotries and march in a new and refreshing direction. But as usual there is not a single voice of change. Not even a feeble one. Pakistani media particularly television anchors who claim ad nauseum to be the harbinger of change could not muster courage to ask right probing questions. Some days back when ‘true Muslims’- according to Minister of Tourism- Taliban butchered Ahmadi Muslims in Lahore in the middle of their Friday prayer in their mosque no one bothered to question the validity and usefulness of the concept of an Islamic state. You will not be able to get to any where if you are keep on asking wrong questions. It does not matter how many times or in how much louder tone. It would only generate more confusion and chaos.
You want to develop a society based on the concept of equality then how on earth you can achieve such a lofty goal if your underlying principle discriminates people in ‘us’ and ‘them’. This is as simple as I said. For the last sixty odd years we have been treading on beaten path. Repeating mistake after another mistake and finding ourselves foolishly surprised to have same dreadful outcomes. How many more years do we need to know that in order to develop a peaceful society we need to have a concept that is inclusive not exclusive. A concept that can bring people together. A principle that does not divide people in ‘us’ and ‘them’ but says ‘we the people’. This can only be achieved if we decide to change our direction. If we make a resolve that we are not going to repeat that same foolish mistakes. We are committed to select a different path. Let us say once and for all that survival of Pakistan is in secularism as it is the only concept that is inclusive. It treats everyone equally and without any discrimination. Everyone is equal in the eyes of law and honour is for those who contribute towards the economic well being of his/her fellow citizens. If we managed to do this we can get our rightful place among humanity and that decision will make all the difference.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference
(The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost, 1915)

Que Cera Cera: Haan Magar Tere Siwa Tere Siwa Tere Siwa

Que Cera Cera: Haan Magar Tere Siwa Tere Siwa Tere Siwa

Haan Magar Tere Siwa Tere Siwa Tere Siwa

Let us be honest with one another. We are a nation who has been taught distorted histories. We have been inculcated with absurd notions of religious pride. For us the source of honour and pride is not based upon once contribution towards humanity but how religious one can be. Everything we see around the world we see it with religious angle and more often we see a plot and conspiracy against our religion. In our social values we attribute great value to so called family pride. In our social values we hardly debate why there is complete lack of sanctity of human life in our society? We kill our daughters and sons in order to save our family pride. We destroy public and private business to protect our religious pride. We protest vehemently against foreign invasion and killing at the hands of foreign solidiers but keep a criminal silence when we kill our own people. Whole country protested angrily at the killing at Data Darbar but there was deafening silence at brutal murder of 95 Ahmedis at Ahmedi Mosque in Lahore.
Let us be honest there is ‘something’ within us which robbed sense of fair play and honesty in us. That ‘something’ has reduced us to mere hypocrites. This ‘something’ has deformed our thinking faculties and we strive and act only to protect this foreign ‘something’ in us. Over the years this ‘something’ has grown bigger and bigger and its appetite for human blood is now insatiable. Unless we recognise this evil within us this madness and bloodshed will never ever be stopped. This evil is religious extremism. This extremism so pervasive, it crept into our ordinary life. It forced us to change how we value our fellow citizens, how to greet them, how to share our sorrows and happiness with them. We forgot to help the fallen one in the time of their needs all because those fallen ones happened to be Ahmedi Muslims. We fail to register our anger when Christian villages were being torched and people were being burnt alive. We turned away when Imam Barghas were being bombed and mourners of Hazrat Imam Hussain were being slaughtered in broad day light. Now this extremism turned Data Nagri in to valley of death and still we are unable to locate the problem. We point fingers towards outsiders sometimes calling them ‘Pakistan ke dushmin’ and sometime labelling them ‘Islam dushmin’.
Let us be honest for our own survival and accept categorically that this problem exist inside ourselves. We are the problem and only we can solve it. Unless we change ourselves we cannot change anything. First and foremost thing that we have to do is accept the notion that all Pakistanis are equal. Honour is only for those who contribute towards the scientific, economical or social well being of fellow Pakistanis. From now on sanctity of human life will be given prime importance in our society. We will never entertain any kind of violence legal or illegal in our society. Pakistan as country is for Pakistanis not only for Muslims. State of Pakistan should be renamed into Democratic Republic of Pakistan and religion must be a personal matter.
If we could do this then I can see a ray of light at the end of tunnel. On the other hand I dread the day when we will be telling this story . First they came for secular and rationalists I did not object because I was not a secular or rationalist. Then they came for Hindu it did not bother me as I was not a Hindu. Then they came for Christians I kept my quiet because I was not a Christian but an ordinary Pakistani. After sometime they came for Shias. I did not stop them as I was an ordinary Pakistani not a shia. Recently they came for Brelivis. I did not do anything because I was not a Brelivi. Then they came for ordinary Pakistanis and when I looked around there was no one to defend me.
Tere Azar ka chara nahin nishtar ke siwa
Aur ye suffaaq maseeha mere qabze mein nahin
Is jahan ke kisi ze roh ke qabze mein nahin
Haan magar tere siwa tere siwa tere siwa

Hum Jo Tareek RahooN pay Ma-ray Gaiy

Hypocritical Mourners

If you have seen Taliban apologists like right-wing media outlets and Islamic parties in Pakistan, you must have seen them justifying Taliban atrocities by claiming them as justified reactions to drone attacks in tribal areas of Pakistan. Like for example political tensions in Ireland. British government tried and failed in their every effort to bring situation in Northern Ireland under control until they realised that they had a problem. After this recognition they set back and devised a peaceful way out of this crisis before it could turn from bad to worse.
As things stand now in Pakistan we do not have this luxury because every other commentator you listen to instead of making situation understandable they on the other hand make it more complex and confusing. Like for example the issue of Taliban of Pakistan. For last two and half years Taliban have killed more than 1000 Pakistanis both civilian and security personals yet Pakistanis are yet to come up with any clear cut and unified position on Talibans. It boggles mind that whenever Taliban kill innocent people in Pakistan their barbaric actions have always been condemned with qualifications like drone attacks, the US war on Afghanistan as if Talibans were bunch of peaceful people. As if they had a civilised administration in Kabul where civil liberties are well protected and women had freedom like any civilised society in the world. As if they morphed into present state of ruthless, barbaric and inhuman beings only after the invasion of the US led coalition forces in Afghanistan.
Nobody in his sane mind would argue the fact that Pakistan is facing an existential threat and present administration in Pakistan is in a state of denial. And things are getting more and more confusing because almost every important organ of state has been infiltrated by Taliban apologists who were nurtured over the years by successive military regimes since late seventies. Media particularly electronic have been dominated by rightists and they give more space to views of people like born again Muslim Imran Khan, General Hameed Gul and Ansar Abbasi and Shareen Mazari etc. These people try insanely to provide rationale to Taliban brutalities. This is a recipe of disaster for the state of Pakistan. Today the state of Pakistan is trying to re-establish its writ in North West Frontier Province and Balochistan but if things did not change it may neither have land nor power to exist beyond few miles radius of Islamabad.
Therefore it is important for every Pakistani not to underestimate the destructive powers of Taliban and they need to show political maturity to stand up for protecting their civil rights enshrined in the constitution of Pakistan. No matter how much appeasing we do we cannot guarantee any protection for our civil liberties. These extremists are a cancer we cannot make peace with cancer, we fight it and try everything to expel it out of our body if we want to have a health living. And it is the only way we can actually defeat extremist onslaught and save the future of our children.

Al Ain Castle, UAE

<div style="float: right; It was galloping in fast forward gear towards becoming a developed country leaving behind a stigma of named as third world economy. Then on 27 December, 2007 elections were held to choose between incumbent president Mowai Kabaki and opposition leader Roala Odenga. Large scale rigging were reported but Kenyan election commission under the influence of President Kabaki declared Mr Kabaki as a winner. However opposition refused to accept the results and started agitation against incumbent Kabaki. Agitation soon engulfed Kenya and Mr Kabaki banned television networks, radio stations and newspapers and ordered law enforcing personnels to fire at demonstrators with live ammunition. Up until now 1500 Kenyans have lost their lives and 250,000 rendered homeless. Violence has not shown any signs of abetting and economy has taken a nose dive. There have been no trading in stock exchange, massive devaluation of national currency and factories and other business centres are closing down. Kenya is facing a severe crisis of its survival as a country and people are fearing a break up of Kenya into two entities. Economic pundits are warning against Kenya becoming bankrupt if no further measures were taken to bail out its economy. It all started with one man's desire to rig elections in his favour.
Kenyans who are forced to see their prosperous country disintegrating in front of their own eyes do not deserve this. They are suffering for a crime they did not commit. This calamity has befallen upon them because one person thinks he is indispensable and his hunger of power is insatiable.
If we compare Pakistan with Kenya, the similarities are alarming. Today Pakistan is facing same political crisis. There are three major players in our politics PPPP, PMLQ and PMLN. All national and international think tanks have been warning incumbents that survival and sovereignty of Pakistan hinges upon free and fair elections. But it seems incumbents are wittingly downplaying reports of pre-pool rigging and not heeding to consequences of their complacency. All parties except PMLQ warned against the possibility of large scale rigging in forth coming elections. Even MQM have now started complaining about rigging indirectly.
If authorities failed to ensure free and fair elections the post election scenario does not carry a good picture for Pakistan. When I envision this scenario I could only see hate, violence and destruction. If we were unable to stop Gen (retd) Musharraf interfering with election results then it will be impossible to stop Pakistan from marching onto Kenyan path and we will find ourselves in a black hole of destruction and lawlessness.

Of Prisons and Prisoners

Heart bleeds to see and hear news about unending imprisonment of all those who said no to authoritarianism and dictatorship.I dedicate following stanza from Richard Lovelace to Mr Atizaz Ehsan, Mr Ali Ahmed and Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmood particularly and all other honourable judges who have been put under forcible detention since the imposition of second martial law on the land of pure.

Stone walls do not a Prison make,

Nor Iron bars a Cage;

Mindes innocent and quiet take

That for an Hermitage;

If I have freedom in my Love,

And in my soule am free;

Angels alone that sore above,

Injoy such liberty.

(To Althea From Prison)

Hai Uss Zood Pesheymann Ka Pesheyann Hona

Listening to these yesteryears' collaborators of every dictatorial regime presents a new low for Pakistani society. It is highly diabolical to see people like Mirza Alam Baig, Hameed Gul and Majeed Malik etc to give us lessons in democracy and democratic movement. I for one will never ever believe in their sincerity with democratic ideals. Look for the timings; they only came out when they were ridiculed by their former master. Had he not made fun of them they would have been happy living in their plush discounted estates. All I can say about them

Ki merey qutl ke baad uss ne jafa se toba
Hai uss zood pesheymann ka pesheymann hona

All I can sense is that they are trying to steal the limelight from lawyers and civil society’s movement for democracy and contitutionalism. If they are genuinely desire for return of democracy they first and formost unreservedly apologies to people of Pakistan and give back all titles and rewards showered over them by former dictators for their services in destroying democratic and judicial institutions in Pakistan without any further ado. Even when they do this lawyers and civil society must keep their movement away from these born again democrats because of their dubious past.

As far as new COAS’s oft repeated letter to army personals is concerned it is nothing but a lip service or may I put it like less matter and more art. Look how sincere our new COAS is with his new commitment that former COAS General Musharraf still occupies the Army house even when he reluctantly retired from army and occupied the presidency illigally. Perhaps our new Army Chief thinks that once in army is always in army and therefore his new directive does not apply to General (retd) Musharraf and he is allowed not only to meet with army officials but to reside with them even though he claims to be the president of Pakistan. Or may be in General Pervaiz Kiyani’s definition a president can not be a political personality.

Common Thread/Threat

With his every appearance on national network to address his ‘aziz humwatan’ I always cherish a wishful idea of something good like his resignation, would come out of those lips so prone to produced a twisted and sexed up version of events enfolding before us in order to perpetuate his rule on the land of pure. Dear readers I am sorry to inform you that we have to wait little longer for this good news of his resignation.
However, going back to his last missed-opportunity our embattled General appeared once again in rage against himself. He criticised prevailing law and order situation in Pakistan and renewed his unflinching commitment to deal miscreants with firm resolve by using this opportunity to postpone forth coming elections as demanded by Q league.
During his speech he expressed his anger on murder of Benazir Bhutto and pledged to complete her mission. About investigation in to her murder he allowed Scotland Yard to carry out their investigative work when all forensic evidences have been carefully washed away from crime scene and government employing fulltime staff to confuse the situation by promoting different theories about causes of BB’s death. On the top of all this our General in greater national interest (read nation as General Musharraf) disallowed Scotland Yard to carry out investigation against any individual merely on allegations.
He looked very agitated when he claimed that intelligence agencies have nothing to do with BB’s murder. Taking stock of events in Pakistan it is evident that those elements that changed Pakistan from a welfare state to a security state would go to any lengths to keep their stranglehold on power. One common thread or threat between sacking of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudary and BB’s murder is their criticism on the activities of intelligence agencies.
Musharraf who appears to be a representative this murky world of intelligence agencies of Pakistan sacked Chief Justice on trumped-up charges when CJ took up missing persons cases. Look how far Musharraf has gone to get rid of CJ when he was later reinstated by Supreme Court of Pakistan. He ransacked and destroyed Supreme Court with his second coup in first week of October, 2007 at the behest of intelligence agencies. Remember those scenes when CJ was surrounded by intelligence chiefs on PTV demanding his resignation.
BB with all her defects was the most popular politician in Pakistan and she had personal experience of dealing with intelligence agencies and their modus operandi. Well before her return she criticised the role of intelligence agencies in Pakistan and she was well aware of threats to her life. She even mentioned the name of one intelligence chief who wanted to kill her. She was a direct threat to those murky elements in Pakistan’s intelligence apparatus and these elements are real power base of General Musharraf.
My thesis is that any prominent personality from any field who criticises the role of intelligence agencies will never be tolerated in Pakistan. And if this personality inspires ordinary people in Pakistan he/she will either be put under house arrest or six feet under. And therein lies the common thread or threat between sacking CJ and BB’s murder.
So when General Musharraf denies the involvement of intelligence agencies in BB’s murder there are only two possibilities. Firstly he knows but he conveniently lies about their involvement. The second scenario is even more disturbing and dangerous if he is telling the truth that agencies are not involved in the murder. That means that he himself has no control over intelligence apparatus in Pakistan and they can do whatever they want at their will. As I said earlier General Musharraf has acted up till now to strengthen and promote the interests of intelligence agencies. Remember his allegations while declaring his second coup against Supreme Court of Pakistan. He appeared very annoyed when he mentioned that CJ demands explanations from intelligence agencies about whisking away of ordinary citizens of Pakistan. Therefore he would do whatever he could to block free, fair and wide ranging investigation into BB’s murder.
Now we are living in a changed environment and with their desperate actions these murky forces exposing their nervousness at the prospects of losing their grip on power. People now are not afraid to ask questions which are once considered taboo. Let this most tragic and foul murder of all murders becomes a final blow to dwindling corrrupt regime of General Musharraf and his collaborators.

‘Truth will come to light; murder can not be hid long.’
(11.6.36-7)

http://imranbhatt.com

My Favourite poem

While I was reading a news peace about the destruction of Robert Frost's house in the USA by drunken hooligans celebrating new year's night reminded me one of my favourite poems. I want to share it with my readers. Regardless we interpret this poem portraying individualism or a hesitant traveller it is no doubt a poetic master piece of all times.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

(1915)

http://imranbhatt.com

New Year Resolutions

From ordinary citizens' point of view the year of 2007 was one of many other tragic years since the inception of Pakistan. A scheme to murder judiciary that started in March culminated with broad day light killing of Supreme Court in November at the hands of a military dictator. Keeping with its traditions Pakistan witnessed the most tragic of deaths when Benazir Bhutto was killed in Rawalpindi at fateful Liaquat Bagh. But this is only a citizen's perspective on year 2007 and we have been told since our birth that citizens of Pakistan are nothing but stupid. Recently our dictator with absolute wisdom brought us to our senses by saying that we are not even humans.

From our dear dictator's point of view it was year of great successes with only few small failures such as July carnage in Karachi, sacking of 63 senior judges, October carnage in Karachi again and killing of BB in Rawalpindi. The successes included putting derailed democracy train back on tracks, getting rid of terrorist judiciary, imposition and lifting of emergency both in the interest of nation, delegation of power from General Musharraf to General (retd) Musharraf and last but not least solving BB's murder case within 72 hours with irrefutable evidence of an audio tape and a press conference by nervous and agitated Brigadier (retd) Cheema. A country where we are still unable to indentify murders of first prime minister of Pakistan Liaquat Ali Khan identifying BB's murders within 72 hours is no mean achievement in any respect. In order to appreciate these successes you need to be in ‘National Interest’ mode. Just the way our holy fathers claim that it is impossible for ordinary muslims to understand and appreciate all the wisdom stored in holy Koran likewise ordinary citizens can never ever understand why military dictators are indispensible for Pakistan.

This is what you get when you have unrepresentative and mediocre people at the helm of affairs. BB with all her defects had something that can be said as hope for Pakistan. After her return she travelled all four corners of Pakistan and tried all her best to unite people divided by tin-pot dictators. What her murder told us that military establishment can not understand any political figure that can unite people and has ability to bring politics from drawing rooms to streets. Any political leader making people as a source of power and can negotiate intelligently towards his/her political goals can not be tolerated at any cost. Lets be sure that military establish can go any length to preserve this status quo even at the cost of killing millions of people or disintegrating Pakistan. Only way to save Pakistan is to get Pakistan rid of military dictators once and for all. This could one and only new year’s resolution for all patriot Pakistanis if we want to save this beautiful country.

Omnipotent Musharraf

Other day one of my work colleagues during our lunch break said that she had previously thought Mohammad would be the most popular name in Pakistan. But judging from news coming out from Pakistan she realised that Musharraf is the most popular name in Pakistan, at least among the ruling elites of Pakistan. To explain her comments she said we had chief executive by the name of Musharraf in late nineties. At the same time we had Chief of Army Staff by the name of Musharraf. We also had some one called Musharraf as Joint Chief of Staff Committee at the same time. Our NSC is headed by someone named as Musharraf. Recently a new president has sworn in whose name is Musharraf.

Though facing these comments is one of the most embarrassing realities of any Pakistani working in western democracies yet I could not help admiring biting satire embedded in her comments. Without being flippant her comments helped me understand the true meanings of word omnipotent. Previously I thought omnipotence is an attribute that can only be attributed to God. I thank Musharraf of making us humans realise that we can share some of the attributes of God.

Like an omnipotent god Musharraf is everywhere. He is a soldier, president, prime minister, foreign minister, chief justice or any thing as occasion demands. He breaks laws and then promulgates laws. He offends and then judges his own offences 'in the best interest of his country'. As a self proclaimed saviour of nation he has to perform many task. He showed great 'courage' and 'resolve' to turn constitution into prostitution with the help of pimps like Sharifuddin Pirzada, Ahmed Raza Kasoori, Malik Qayyum and Waseem Sajjad but only for the 'greater interest of his nation'. He is multi-faceted person and has many heads like Medusa.

Like a person who always gives credit where credit is due I for one would like to give credit to Musharraf for his 'courage', 'resolve' and his untiring efforts 'in the best interest of his country' in following words:

Respect to your great place, and let the devil

Be sometime honoured for his burning throne.

(Measure For Measure, 5.1.290-1)

http://uk.360.yahoo/imranbhatt

Topcy-turvy Pakistan

Yesterday I was reading Richard III by Shakespear and there were few lines that depicted a true picture of Pakistan. A society where noble, honest and integral people such as Aitizaz Ahsan, Ali Ahmed Kurd, Munir malik, Chief Justice Iftikhar Choudary and his fellow judges are either behind bars or put under house arrest and all sycophants, hypocrites, dishonest, corrupt and law breakers are holding the heighest offices in the land of pure. Constitution of Pakistan

December is normally remembered for Christmas however for Pakistanis it brings back dreadful and extremely disappointing memories of dismemberment of Pakistan. But adding insult to their shattered pride this December will be remembered for wholesale constitutional amendments by General (reluctantly retired) Musharraf that completely disfigured the constitution of Pakistan.

After their disgraceful defeat in 1971 Pakistanis regrouped and built their confidence in the shape of standing unanimously behind 1973 constitution. This was a defining moment in the history of Pakistan when world saw a defeated nation showing great resolve and commitment to work together towards democratic goals. This unanimous resolution was the pride of Pakistan that paved the way for first democratically elected government in Pakistan and for the first time Pakistan registered itself on the world map as a constitutional democracy a country otherwise remembered by its despotic and dictatorial rulers.

Like any other dictator General (reluctantly retired) Musharraf introduced new amendments in the constitution while lifting emergency on 15 December, 2007. Among many other damaging amendments introduced by present despotic regime there is one amendment that completely disfigured the spirit of constitution. Constitution basically represents the will of people, it is wishes and aspirations of its citizens. One fatal amendment that changed the basic definition of constitution has been introduced by this ugly and despotic regime requires no parliamentary approval of all extra constitutions actions committed by General (reluctantly retired) Musharraf. It means that instead of representing the will and wishes its citizens now constitution of Pakistan represents will and wishes of General (reluctantly retired) Musharraf and this amendment paves the way for future dictators.

Alas! it is a good bye to constitution of Pakistan. Death of a nation's pride at the hand of a dictator. An early death before it could see its youth in full spring. People of Pakistan you need to understand it very well that no entity or person can guarantee your rights. It is you and only you who can guarantee your rights. Your constitution is the only document that translates your wishes to action. If you allowed a person whoever he/she may be to plagiarise with your constitution your are committing an act of suicide. You have to fight this injustice with your rights. You have to fight for justice with your lives lest you need Justice to defend for your rights.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://imranbhatt.blogspot.com/2007/12/good-bye-constitution-of-pakistan.html' title='Good Bye! They are making most from this venture by charging Rs 250.00 per sheep and Rs 500.00 per cattle head.

I personally believe that Pakistani Army are not going to fail in their new venture as they have experience of trading members of national and provincial assemblies like a herd of sheep. Furthermore, the way they treat civilians in Pakistan is reminiscent of the way farm owner treats his/her stock. So their new business enterprise makes very good business sense as they have all the skills and experience in this type of trade.

O What a goodly outside falsehood hath!

I was reading a news piece other day about Justice (retired) Safdar Shah's daughter's letter to daughter of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto (ZAB). ZAB forced Justice Safdar Shah to leave his office. Events took a nasty turn on ZAB and ZAB's case appeared before supreme court bench that also included Justice Safdar Shah. Like a professional and honest man Justice Safdar Shah refused to buckle down under pressure from military dictator Zia-UL-Haq and pleaded ZAB not guilty. After that he was dismissed from supreme court and forced to live in exile.

In her letter daughter of Justice Safdar Shah, Ghazala tired to refresh in BB's memory the plight of her beloved father at the hands of enslaved judiciary and asked her to put her political weight behind lawyers movement for the restoration of judiciary in Pakistan. It was no doubt a moving letter but I believe it is a futile effort to rekindle any such memory in the heart of political BB.
To fight for independent judiciary in only important to those people who have no other choice but to live in Pakistan. Politicians like BB come to visit Pakistan to rule over hapless and hopeless Pakistanis. It does not matter to them whether judiciary is free or not because they know that no matter what they do they can very easily leave with their ill gotten assets to places in Dubai, London or USA.

Free judiciary is for people like you and I. People like Atzaz Ahsan, Ali Mohammad Kurd, Munir Malik and all other lawyers, journalists and members of civil society who made a conscious decision to spend rest of their lives in Pakistan. Therefore we need institutions to safe guard our rights. We need a place where we believe that our pleas will be heard. Where you have to pay for your deeds no matter how much strong you are. And we were beginning to witness this happening under the leadership of Chief Justice Iftikhar Choudary and all those honourable judges who refused to take oath under PCO.

Reading her articles in various well known newspapers, listening her delivering speeches on democracy and human rights and then analysing her politics one can not but conclude that they are poles apart. What she writes or says and what she does do not make any good sense. She appears well before her audience and strikes the right chords and reminds me of The Merchant of Venice of Shakespeare:

The devil can site scripture for his purpose.
An evil soul producing holy witness
Is like a villain with a smiling cheek,
A goodly apple rotten at the heart.
O What a goodly outside falsehood hath!
(1.3.95-9)

During her self imposed exile BB was most worried about her cases in Switzerland and Spain. Why? Because she knew that courts in Switzerland and Spain are free and she can not do any thing to stop legal proceedings unless Pakistan government stop pursuing these cases against her. She showed her anger towards Pakistani judiciary when supreme court issued a stay order on NRO. Therefore expecting her to demand for an independent judiciary is like a suicide for her. She is only here to rule and once her prime ministership would be in any sorts of doubt she will taking any next available flight to Dubai, London or Washington.

Farcical Transition

Few sections of Pakistani press have been claiming since General (reluctantly retired) Musharraf's decision to shed his skin that it is a transition from a military rule to civilian. But I believe anyone who believes in the originality of this transition either is naive or have no clue about the military politics in Pakistan or he/she is simply living in a fools paradise. Old habits die hard. A wolf in a sheep's cloak will still be a wolf, a wild beast. This so called transition is a farce. Would you call it a transition where General Musharraf transfers his powers to General (reluctantly retired) Musharraf? A general so reluctant to retire that he refused to leave his former residence and decided to keep both Army House and Presidential Palace at the expense of tax payers money.

हस बब गोने इंसाने?

In her recent artical in Christian Science Monitor BB elaboratly explained the electoral engineering by governmnet in forth coming elections for her western audiance. I often surprise myself by reading editorials of leading newspapers in Pakistan when almost all of them pinning all their hopes in forth coming elections as if these elections are going to achieve substantial results that can alleviate political turmoil in Pakistan. The scale of disillusionment is gripping this country from ordinary people to so called intelligentsia. This is a classic example of intellectual state of a nation that has been ruled by tin pot dictators since 1947. Instead of encouraging will of the people to be implemented opinion makers are looking towards new COAS to come to their rescue as if he would be any different from previous tin pot dictators. The honourable judges who said NO knew that very well that future of Pakistan lies with breaking the present status quo. In fact civil society in Pakistan have realised that without changing the present power structure in Pakistan nothing substantial can be achieved. Lets be sure without an iota of doubt that we can only secure the future of our coming generations by saying NO to all those forces who working overtime to give life safer to deteriorating status quo.
Lets see who are the main players trying to save this status quo. Military establishment in Pakistan, they would go to any length in order to save the status quo because they have been the biggest beneficiaries of current status quo in Pakistan. Religious parties which serve as political and private militias for military establishment in Pakistan. Feudalism and free democracy can not work together. Feudalism’s survival depends upon restricting free flow of information and free movement of people and that makes them natural partners of all the forces working to preserve the status quo. When I say feudalism I mean state of mind and all those forces who abhor freedom of information and movement are feudalistic in their mind set even if they are based in urban areas of Pakistan. Capitalists always advocate for liberal economic policies because these policies provide them all the freedom to exploit and plunder productive resources for their profit. They provide necessary finance for the forces of status quo to secure their position and in return they get absolute freedom to plunder.
Therefore expecting any thing good come out of the offices of new COAS is like living in a fools’ paradise. He would never commit a suicide not for rule of law and constitution. Religious parties would do every thing to keep masses from taking their political destiny in their own hands. Major politic parties are all part and parcel of status quo. The largest political party Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) can better be called a feudo-political party. Almost all of its top leadership including our daughter of the east hails from feudal background. Hoping that this feudal leadership will bring about radical changes in the power structure is like expecting from wolves to stop preying. As for capitalists represented by like of Nawaz Shrif are the life blood of this status quo. Their whole capitalistic empire depends upon the concessions and discounts granted by autocratic and dictatorial regimes.
Any rescue available now lies with people of Pakistan. They need to come out for their rights because only they have true and honest sensitivities to safe guard their constitutional rights. Feudo-political parties, military dictators, politico-islamic parties and capitalists have vested interested with this status quo and should never ever be entrusted noble cause of civil liberties for masses of Pakistan. Any student of history would tell us any movement that puts personalities in front of their principles will be source of despair and disillusionment. Therefore no one should be trusted and only undiluted implementation of constitution of Pakistan can guarantee their rights and secure the future of Pakistan.

Election Generali Style

With all major political parties in line to take part in forth coming generali elections, Pakistan is getting ready for another military take over in next five to seven years. Pakistan’s political history is replete with such arrangements of political transformation from military to civilian dispensation only to save military’s ugly face and makes things so unworkable for civilian dispensation that military have to take things in their hands only to safeguard national interests.
Pakistan’s army or to be more precise its elites are the most loyal servants of the USA. Peep into history and you will find that whenever the USA wanted an unflinching cooperation from Pakistan there happened to be a military general imposing marshal law on the land of pure. In late 1970s the US wanted to have plaint government in the wake of Soviet invasion in Afghanistan and we had Amir-ul-Monineen General Zia-ul-Haq imposing martial law and toeing the American line, making mockery of constitution of Pakistan and leaving behind nation of drug addicts, loads of ammunition in private hands and society divided on ethnic and sectarian lines.
Then comes 1999 and the US wanted a cooperative and friendly Pakistan so that they can take their revenge on war torn Afghanistan’s Taliban and their Osama Bin Laden. The result was an obvious one, military take over and the US has been granted full excess to use land of pure to strike their enemies in Afghanistan. Here I am not putting ideas in your mind to suggest that all military take-overs in Pakistan are the US sponsored but I believe that readers are better judge to make their own mind.
Since the inception of Pakistan military take over in Pakistan and American global agenda go hand in hand. Obviously this courtship is not a futile exercise. It brings forth billions of dollars that go straight in to military coffers and no bloody civilian representative not even their own chaudaries or somoros etc can dare ask the whereabouts of these billions of dollars.
What will follow now? Political parties will take part in generali elections. With careful electoral engineerings we are in for split mandate with no party having decisive majority to form government. For the survival of national assembly, members of legislative assemble will be asked to pass a constitutional amendment to give legality to November 3, 2007 martial law. Every future government will be working under 58(2)b hanging over its head like a sword of Damocles. The most pleasing thing for military is that they do not have to search for the likes of Shoaukat Aziz but the embodiment of political Islam Maulana Fazlul Rehman, our champion of democracy Benazir Bhutto and our man of the heaviest of mandates Nawaz Sharif with be at their service and they will do whatever they are employed for. These faces will give validity to present day dispensation. And if in the future owing to the USA’s global agenda there emerges a situation where there is possibility of making big bucks military junta will destroy their own hand made puppets and become sole rulers of the land of pure.
With every thing falling apart around them it has been very stressful time for civil society and human rights activists in Pakistan. Media have been gagged and plaint judiciary is in place. Those judges who refused to sell their soul have been put under house arrest. Their misplaced confidence in so called democratic parties has proved one thing that when you are fighting for lofty goals this is a cardinal mistake to bring personalities before your principles. People who enthuse crowds with their fiery oratory are now source of bewilderment and desperation. It is shameful to see Barrister Atizaz Ahsan submitting his nomination papers (which I call kaagzatey haramzadgy). Now I wonder how a person who can not stand against the leader of his own party can be entrusted to lead people in their fight against military establishment.
One last thought who owns Pakistan? If it is owned by people of Pakistan then who owns military institutions in Pakistan? Looking at present factual realities it is obvious that military institutions in Pakistan own Pakistan and the logical conclusion that follows makes a very disturbing reading army in Pakistan is army of General Musharif and it should not be misunderstood as Pakistan Army.

Rethinking Priorities

We are at the crossroads. As Mirza Ghalib says in his couplet

Eeman mujay rokay hai jo khenchay hai mujey kufr
Kaaba merey peechay hai kaleesa merey aagay

We are trapped between push of development and pull of traditions. Young generation is confused and bewildered where to get reconciliation. Main stream religious leaders failed to satisfy the post-modern political issues. The situation is further aggravated by the absence of any kind of discussion and dialogue in the society. This absence of dissenting views has led to proliferation of orthodox and violent means to assert ones point of view.

Recent kidnapping of three residents of Islamabad by female students of an Islamic school is nothing but a 'vigilante justice'. The way government took a very soft stance against the occupation of children library by female students of the same school emboldened their courage and now they are threatening to establish an Islamic court in their school. This is blessing of having military power in over society. This is exact opposite what Jinnah had dreamt for, a tolerant, secular society, where everyone would be identified as Pakistani.

But I think one should not to be surprised by these events as a cursory look at the evolution of political economy will reveal the true picture of Pakistani society. It is a society where one can do whatever he wants as long as he has the monopoly of violence. A constitutionally elected prime minister dismisses his Army Chief, but as Army Chief rejects his orders and topples his democratically elected government. Why? Here gun power is more powerful then peoples power in Pakistan.

Have we ever entertained a thought, what if Chief Justice rejects his authority and establishes his own government just like the way General Musharif did to Nawaz Sharif? I know we can not even imagine about it because army as an institution holds the monopoly over violence in our society. By the use of their coercive power they have managed to twist laws in their favour. Why the managed to do this because of our silence. They willfully have twisted the political history of Pakistan under the guise of indispensableness. They are not the guardian of national interest; people of Pakistan are the guardian of national interest. Armed forces in every civilized society are one instrument among many at the disposal of the people to achieve their national interests. Nations are indispensable not the institutions.

Just like in Animal Farm, in our society all institutions are equal but some institutions are more equal then others. Pakistan Army since the inception of Pakistan has been 'the most equal institution' of Pakistan. Now the time has come to put everything in its right order. A place where it belongs

In order to have a balance institutional structure power must to be handed over to the people of Pakistan. This can only be achieved by the way of establishing a tradition of scrutinizing each and every action no matter how sensitive it is. This can only be achieved by revisiting our history and questioning all the values and dogmas. We need to stand up and as Soraya Shahpour-Ulrich writes," we must defend justice with our lives lest we need justice to defend our lives."

The Beginning of an End

After trampling down every democratic institution in Pakistan under his military boots, General Pervaiz Musharif turned his guns towards the last bastion of civil liberties in Pakistan i.e. Supreme Court of Pakistan. After failing to intimidate Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Choudary to resign he then suspended him on false and flimsy accusations. We need to remember he is the same Chief Justice who ruled privatization of Pakistan Steel Mills as illegal. He is the same Chief Justice who directed the government trace disappearance of people by secret agencies of Pakistan.

This could be very important juncture in the political history of Pakistan where judiciary has a dark history of following military orders by providing military rulers ‘legal justifications’ for their unconstitutional acts by legal creativeness of “doctrine of necessity”. Here great care should be taken for not to transform present political struggle in to a fight between two institutions i.e. Supreme Court of Pakistan and Pakistan Army. As it is a norm with all oppressive regimes to first try to intimidate people into submission. If they fail in getting peoples’ unconditional submission they then try to highjack their struggle by describing it as ‘this struggle is nothing but a mere clash of personalities’. That is what General Musharif tried to portray in his recent interview on the same channel which his police force ransacked few days earlier. In this interview he presented himself as a good boy, who always goes by the book and respects the sanctity of the constitution which he abrogated in November, 1999. And obviously Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Choudary was a bad boy in his version of story.

There is no doubt about the democratic nature of this struggle which includes almost every section of society from lawyers to journalists to students to political activists. With the inclusion of mass political parties like Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League (N) this struggle has a potential of becoming a harbinger of new political culture in Pakistan. Though sign are very encouraging, like the case of every rotten and dying military regime anything can be expected from General Musharif. Like the most orthodox advocate of Generak Musharif’s ‘moderate enlightenment’ Mr Shujaat Hussain insulted current democratic struggle by reducing it as a fight between two institutions (Army and Judiciary) for more perks and privileges. Whenever one speaks he speaks from his experiences and Mr Shujaat’s experience tells him that his struggle has always been for political perks and privileges. If people of Pakistan stood fast and did not accept regime’s explanation of events as a last option before using their brute force- they are so familiar with, they will try to create confusion by inviting different political parties to enjoy power-share with them.

We should give this struggle its rightful status which is the struggle of people of Pakistan for their democratic rights and civil liberties. Signs are very ominous of military junta in Pakistan and eventual outcome of this struggle will be the removal army generals from the political scene once and for all. And any group of people or political party tried to come in from back doors in order to restore the status-quo, it would be considered to sabotage peoples’ struggle in the favour of those who kept people of Pakistan away from their democratic rights since 1947. So Benazir Bhutto should be bewared of ‘soft corner’ which General Musharif mentioned in his TV interview for her political party. He is desperate for political support. Supporting him at the present moment means back stabbing peoples’ struggle for democratic rights.

It would be wrong to look at the present unrest in Pakistan without global context. It is part of global trend where more and more people are expressing their unhappiness with the way USA (Bush) uses its military muscles for corporate purposes. It is part of current massive wave of anti neo-liberalism which stretches from South America to Asia. Anyone who is friend of Bush is considered enemy of people. So the present upheaval is rejection of neo-liberal policies by peoples of Pakistan. They broke the seven years long silence by voicing their instance anger at military government of General Pervaiz Musharif, a Bush ally in the so-called fight against terrorism and his suspension of Chief Justice provided only a channel and a way out to express peoples’ disgust for military rule in Pakistan.

Friendships do have impact as General Musharif learnt few tricks from his friend President Bush. He tried to manipulate judiciary the same way Bush administration did to US judiciary. In both the cases judges have been removed from their offices on performance related issues. However on looker know that Bush administration’s actions were politically motivated. In the same way present military regime are going to face two very far-reaching court cases in coming months before elections. One related to General Musharif’s having two offices at the same time i.e. Chief of Army Staff and President of Pakistan. The second related to dual nationality of Prime Minister of Pakistan Shoukat Aziz. Obviously military regime does not want to have an independent Chief Justice hearing both these far-reaching cases. One has to remember that Prime Minister Aziz has been linked with the people responsible with the recent Karachi Stock Exchange crash as well as with privitisation of Pakistan Steel Mills.

Public protest in Pakistan is not just a protest for Chief Justice but it is a protest against Bush’s friend and a mass demonstration against US foreign policy. So here is very ready made remedy for General Musharif from present turmoil. If he denounces US foreign policy and refuses to be a part of Bush’s war for corporate dominance this might mitigate the intensity of current hostile political atmosphere in Pakistan. However this is only a beginning, in fact a beginning of an end. The beginning of the people’s power in Pakistan, the end of military dictatorship. General Musharif has to go sooner or later it would be advisable if he retreats back to his barracks and leave all the institutions to the people of Pakistan. And for army generals they need to reconcile their internal culture with the present changes and ground realities in Pakistani society. They should do what they are paid for, to serve the people of Pakistan not to rule over them. They should stop conquering their own country and turn their attention towards their profession by dismantling all their commercial enterprises in Pakistan for the protection of which they have to invade democracy in Pakistan again and again.

So if people of Pakistan kept their aims and objectives clear then this could be the last nail in the coffin of military rule in Pakistan.
